When our newborn baby was born 3 weeks early unexpectedly and was in respiratory distress, the questions began to add up. The doctors discovered Bucklin had Down syndrome. It was a time of uncertainty and worry, but through our faith, churches, family, friends, community, and health care providers, we were able to survive his NICU stay and the stress of an unexpected diagnosis, but we had questions…how could we help our son have the best life he could have? What could that look like? The medical world gave such a big picture, but…what was the little picture? What should we do in the following weeks? Days? Minutes?
The Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network was one of the first supports for my family. We were welcomed with a gift from them congratulating our sweet new arrival. When we faced a world of “poor parents” and “I’m sorry” comments, the parent groups of DSDN were there with “Congrats! Welcome to the ‘Lucky Few’ club. You don’t know it yet, but you’re going to be so blessed with what’s to come!” The encouragement of connecting with others in our shoes was priceless. They were the fresh air of encouragement mixed with reality we needed. We believe that everyone should be able to have that support and joy surrounding the arrival of their baby, and by donating, you can help connect parents to these invaluable resources!
